Agilent Technologies Inc. (NYSE: A) and the National University of Singapore today announced the winner of the fourth annual Engineering Excellence Competition. This year, the program focused on engineering in medicine, future transportation systems, and smart and sustainable cities. The winning project was a system for tracking the rehabilitation activities of patients who have suffered strokes or have permanent disabilities. The system uses Agilent's VEE software and USB modular instruments. "This event is a highly anticipated challenge for our final year electrical and computer engineering students," said associate professor Loh Ai Poh, deputy head of undergraduate programs at the National University of Singapore. "We were really excited to see the results of this year's competition and grateful to Agilent to have invested their resources and energies into making this program a reality for our students." "We were very pleased by the quality and creativity of this year's submissions," said Ee Huei-Sin, vice president of Agilent's Basic Instruments Division. "Each year we see amazing entries that display innovation, creativity and industry value. Our sponsorship of this event allows Agilent to demonstrate its commitment to developing the next generation of engineers." Agilent and the university's department of electrical and computer engineering conduct the program jointly, offering final-year engineering students the chance to work on projects that are driven by real-world industry needs. These students develop test applications using Agilent products. They are given eight months to research and conduct in-depth analyses of their projects and create a fully functional test solution. They worked in groups of two, with guidance from an academic supervisor. Upon completion of the project, the students' work is evaluated by a panel of NUS and Agilent judges who evaluate the project's innovation and real-world application as well as the knowledge learned. The two finalists and one winner were chosen at the end of the two-semester project and given cash awards for their selected work.
